Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—contrary to prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
The MRPS22 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein unique to mammalian mitoribosomes, located telomeric and transcribed opposite to the forkhead box L2 gene. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS22 exists on chromosome Xq.
