Background
Antigen KI-67 is a nuclear protein associated with cellular proliferation and ribosomal RNA transcription. Inactivation of KI-67 leads to inhibition of rRNA synthesis. The Ki-67 protein (also known as MKI67) is a well-known cellular marker for proliferation, strictly associated with active phases of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2, and mitosis) and absent in resting (G0) cells. During interphase, Ki-67 is localized in the nucleus, while during mitosis, it relocates to the surface of chromosomes.
