Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, which are signaling molecules regulating various cellular processes such as cell growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, and oncogenic transformation. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
At least two encode receptor-type PTPs with a short extracellular domain, a single transmembrane region, and two tandem intracytoplasmic catalytic domains. Another variant encodes a nonreceptor-type isoform with a distinct hydrophilic N-terminus.
Studies in mice suggest regulatory roles in RAS-related signal transduction, cytokine-induced STAT signaling, and activation of voltage-gated K⁺ channels.
