Target Information
Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and epithelial tissues such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members of this family share a conserved cysteine motif.
The DEFA1 gene encodes defensin alpha 1, found in neutrophil granules and involved in phagocyte-mediated host defense. Several alpha defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8, and DEFA1 differs from DEFA3 by only one amino acid. Both genes are subject to copy number variation.
