Target Information
The protein encoded by the ALDH7A1 gene is a member of subfamily 7 in the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family. These enzymes play a major role in detoxifying aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. This protein has homology to the 26g pea turgor protein and is involved in lysine catabolism occurring in the mitochondrial matrix. It is found in both cytosol and mitochondria, likely due to alternative translation initiation sites. Additional isoforms exist, and mutations in this gene are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Several related pseudogenes have also been identified.
