Target Information
Eukaryotes contain two protein translational systems, one in the cytoplasm and one in the mitochondria. Mitochondrial translation is essential for maintaining mitochondrial function. Mutations in this system can lead to breakdown of the respiratory chain–oxidative phosphorylation system and impaired maintenance of mitochondrial DNA.
This gene encodes one of the mitochondrial translation elongation factors, which plays a role in normal mitochondrial function and may be involved in disease states associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.
