Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (MW 111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It acts as a stem cell marker with reversible expression on human hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 may function as a receptor mediating endocytosis and regulating adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells.
It likely facilitates attachment to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and may serve as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans, enabling interaction with lectins. CD34 also presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins and is phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
