This antibody detects endogenous levels of total CD81.
Target Information
CD81 (TAPA-1, target of anti-proliferative antibody-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family expressed on most nucleated cells, particularly germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of immune cells.
In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance. It also serves as a receptor for the hepatitis C virus.
Like other tetraspanins (CD9, CD37, CD53, CD63, CD82), CD81 is a cell-surface glycoprotein with four hydrophobic domains, mediating signal transduction involved in cell development and motility. CD81 associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins, and antibodies to CD81 can have anti-proliferative effects on lymphoid cell lines. CD81 is localized in a tumor-suppressor gene region and is considered a candidate gene for malignancies.
