Target Information

Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens expressed on various cell types such as lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
B2M is also found freely in plasma and exhibits sequence homology to immunoglobulin constant regions with a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure. The protein is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
The B2M gene, located on chromosome 15, encodes this protein; mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2-microglobulin levels serve as a marker for renal function and as a prognostic indicator in HIV infection.
