Target Information
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and may serve as novel cancer or disease biomarkers.
This gene, part of the kallikrein subfamily cluster on chromosome 19, encodes an enzyme involved in proteolysis of intercellular cohesive structures preceding desquamation—the shedding of the outermost epidermal layer.
Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
