Caspase 2 유전자는 cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) 계열 단백질을 암호화합니다. Caspase의 연속적 활성화는 세포사멸(apoptosis)의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 합니다. Caspase는 비활성 전구체 형태로 존재하며, 보존된 아스파르트산 잔기에서 절단되어 큰 소단위체와 작은 소단위체로 나뉘며, 이들이 이합체를 형성해 활성 효소가 됩니다. 다양한 세포사멸 자극에 의해 단백질 절단이 유도되며, 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 여러 전사 변이체가 생성되어 다양한 아이소폼을 형성합니다.
