Target Information
NEK4 is a serine/threonine kinase involved in signal transduction and cellular communication. It acts predominantly upon threonine residues and is expressed in most primary carcinomas.
Protein kinases are enzymes that transfer a phosphate group from ATP to an acceptor amino acid in a substrate protein, mediating signal transduction in eukaryotic cells. They regulate processes such as metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes more than 500 gene products and is divided into 8 major groups based on catalytic domain sequences. The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) consists of kinases related to MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, Ste20/MAP4K). MAP kinase cascades, including MAPK and upstream kinases (MAPKKs), are well characterized in the yeast pheromone response pathway.
