Target Information
The general transcription factor TFIIE plays an essential role in eukaryotic transcription initiation together with RNA polymerase II and other general factors. Human TFIIE consists of two subunits, TFIIE-alpha (57 kDa) and TFIIE-beta (34 kDa), which join the preinitiation complex after RNA polymerase II and TFIIF.
TFIIE-alpha is necessary for transcription initiation and can replace the natural subunit in in vitro transcription assays. Its sequence includes several structural motifs such as leucine repeat, zinc finger, and helix-turn-helix, showing similarities to bacterial sigma factors, suggesting direct involvement in transcription regulation.
