Target Information

Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) are classified as high or low risk based on their association with cancer. HPV16 and HPV18 are the most common high-risk types, while HPV6 and HPV11 are low-risk. Approximately 90% of cervical cancers contain high-risk HPV DNA. The E6 and E7 genes of high-risk HPVs are essential for transformation, interacting with p53 and pRB, respectively. High-risk HPV E7 proteins bind to pRB with higher affinity, and only high-risk HPV E6 proteins form detectable complexes with p53 in vitro.

HPVs are small DNA viruses infecting epithelial tissues of the skin and mucosa. Over 90 types have been identified, causing benign lesions such as warts and verrucae. However, types 16, 18, 31, and 33 are known to be oncogenic and associated with cervical cancer. The E6 protein acts as a transcriptional transactivator, binds double-stranded DNA, and may contribute to the oncogenic potential of HPV (cervical neoplasia-associated virus).
