Target Information
Neurogenin-2 is a member of the neurogenin subfamily of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor genes that play an important role in neurogenesis from migratory neural crest cells.
During mouse neurogenesis, Ngn2 and Ngn1 are expressed in distinct progenitor populations in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Mutation analyses demonstrate that Ngn1 is required for the determination of neuronal precursors for proximal cranial sensory ganglia, while Ngn2 is necessary for the determination of precursors for epibranchial placode-derived sensory neurons.
