Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase involved in bone remodeling and resorption. It belongs to the peptidase C1 family and is predominantly expressed in osteoclasts. It is also expressed in some human breast cancers, potentially contributing to tumor invasiveness. Mutations in this gene cause pycnodysostosis, an autosomal recessive disease characterized by osteosclerosis and short stature. This gene may be subject to RNA editing.
