Target Information
The cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family of proteins functions as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain to drive a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, resulting in the production of water. The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits, both mitochondrial and nuclear. Found in the inner mitochondrial membrane, COX5 is the heme A-containing chain that converts oxygen and hydrogen into water. Two isoforms exist: COX5a and COX5b. Under high oxygen conditions, COX5a transcription increases, while under hypoxic conditions, COX5b transcription is up-regulated to maximize COX apoenzyme turnover.
