Target Information
This gene encodes a secreted, homodimeric glycoprotein expressed in various tissues and may have autocrine or paracrine functions.
It contains a 5′ UTR rich in CAG trinucleotide repeats and encodes a protein with 11 conserved cysteine residues, phosphorylated by protein kinase C on serine residues.
The protein may regulate renal and intestinal calcium and phosphate transport, cell metabolism, or calcium/phosphate homeostasis.
Overexpression of human stanniocalcin 1 in mice leads to high serum phosphate, dwarfism, and increased metabolic rate.
Altered expression is observed in hepatocellular, ovarian, and breast cancers.
