Target Information
Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions along with an anion, typically bicarbonate. Transferrin facilitates iron transport from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. It is the primary iron transport protein in blood, with about one-third of total transferrin normally bound to iron. Measurement of transferrin levels provides an indicator of iron-carrying capacity and can reveal abnormalities in iron metabolism such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
