Target Information
CD59 (Protectin) is a small (18–20 kDa) GPI-anchored ubiquitously expressed inhibitor of the membrane attack complex (MAC). It regulates complement cascade by preventing the formation of cytolytic pores in the plasma membrane. CD59 interacts with C5b-8 complex and inhibits incorporation of C9, crucial for osmolytic pore formation. It also acts as a low-affinity ligand of human CD2, involved in T cell costimulation and lymphocyte signal transduction. Mutations in CD59 cause deficiency leading to hemolytic anemia, thrombosis, and cerebral infarction. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
