Target Information
Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties. It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein produced and secreted in many tissues throughout the body. PEDF induces apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells and inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2. Its neuroprotective effects result from suppression of neuronal apoptosis induced by oxidative or excitotoxic stress. PEDF binds to its high-affinity receptor PEDF-R, a lipase-linked membrane protein, which mediates its diverse biological activities. PEDF is considered a potential therapeutic candidate for neurodegenerative and angiogenesis-related diseases, including AMD, PDR, and various cancers.
