Target Information
Phenobarbital is a long-acting barbituric acid derivative with antipsychotic properties.
It binds to and activates the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A receptor, mimicking the inhibitory actions of GABA in the brain.
Activation of the phenobarbital-receptor-ionophore complex increases chloride channel openings, causes membrane hyperpolarization, and leads to synaptic inhibition and decreased neuronal excitability.
Additionally, phenobarbital inhibits glutamate-induced depolarization.
