Target Information
Metallothionein (MT) is a sulfhydryl- and cysteine-rich protein found in microorganisms, plants, and all invertebrate and vertebrate animals. Metallothioneins are low-molecular-weight proteins involved in cell growth, repair, and differentiation. They play key roles in metal ion detoxification, protecting cells from the toxicity of cadmium, mercury, and copper. As stress-response proteins and free radical scavengers, metallothioneins are associated with inflammation and cellular protection from reactive oxygen species, ionizing radiation, pharmacological agents, and mutagens. They are broadly expressed in heart, liver, kidney, breast, and testis tissues.
