Target Information

Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) transfers high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes—sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK—encoded by separate genes.
MtCK forms dimers and octamers, unlike cytosolic creatine kinase which is exclusively dimeric. Overexpression of ubiquitous MtCK has been observed in malignant cancers with poor prognosis, potentially linked to high energy turnover and reduced apoptosis.
Two genes on chromosome 15 encode identical mitochondrial creatine kinase proteins, showing ~80% homology between sarcomeric and ubiquitous forms.
