Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the coupling of iodotyrosines to produce thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine). Mutations in the TPO gene can lead to disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Multiple transcript variants exist, though some full-length forms remain undetermined. Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
