ABCB11은 간세포의 담즙 모세관으로 담즙염을 ATP 의존적으로 분비하는 데 관여합니다. 주로 간에서 발현되며, 간세포의 모세관 미세융모 및 소포체에 위치합니다.
이 단백질은 두 개의 상동 절반으로 구성된 다기능 폴리펩타이드로, 각각은 막 고정 도메인과 ATP 결합 카세트(ABC) 도메인을 포함합니다.
ABCB11의 결함은 진행성 가족성 간내 담즙정체증 2형(PFIC2) 의 원인이 되며, 이는 소아에서 담즙정체와 정상 감마-글루타밀트랜스퍼레이스 활성으로 특징지어지는 유전성 간질환입니다.
또한 명확한 가족력이 없는 만성 간내 담즙정체 사례에서도 ABCB11 결함이 보고되었습니다.
