Target Information
Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein originally isolated as an osteoblast-specific factor. It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and serves as a ligand for αVβ3 and αVβ5 integrins. In preosteoblasts, Periostin functions as a cell adhesion molecule, contributing to osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment.
Periostin expression is mainly detected in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, but is up-regulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer. Its expression is increased by bone morphogenetic protein (BMP2) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). Structurally, Periostin contains a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeats, and a C-terminal domain.
