Target Information

Slc1a6 encodes a glutamate transporter, also known as an excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT), part of the solute carrier family 6 (SLC1). EAATs are sodium- and potassium-dependent and widely distributed throughout the brain.
There are five EAAT subtypes, each with specific distribution. SLC1A6 mediates uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate, functioning as a symporter that transports one amino acid molecule with two or three Na⁺ ions and one proton, coupled with counter-transport of one K⁺ ion.
It also mediates Cl⁻ flux to prevent charge accumulation. SLC1A6 plays a redundant role in rapid removal of released glutamate from the synaptic cleft, essential for terminating postsynaptic glutamate action.
Diseases associated with SLC1A6 include Dicarboxylic Aminoaciduria.
