Target Information
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by adding the telomere repeat sequence TTAGGG.
The enzyme includes a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (encoded by the TERT gene) and an RNA component serving as a template for telomere repeat synthesis.
Telomerase expression is normally repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence.
Deregulation of telomerase may contribute to oncogenesis.
Studies in mouse suggest telomerase also aids chromosomal repair by de novo synthesis of telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks.
Alternative splicing generates different isoforms of TERT, which may regulate telomerase activity.
