Target Information
This gene encodes the peptide hormones calcitonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and katacalcin through tissue-specific alternative RNA splicing and cleavage of inactive precursor proteins.
Calcitonin regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism, CGRP functions as a vasodilator, and katacalcin acts as a calcium-lowering peptide.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
