Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to a highly conserved cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein (ARPP) family. This protein acts as an endogenous ligand for the sulfonylurea receptor ABCC8/SUR1, the regulatory subunit of the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel on pancreatic beta cell membranes. It plays a key role in insulin release control by modulating KATP channel activity. The gene is considered a candidate for type 2 diabetes, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
