Claudin-18은 폐와 위에서 특이적으로 발현되는 타이트 결합 단백질로, claudin-18 유전자의 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 생성됩니다. 폐 특이적 형태는 T/EBP/NKX2.1 전사인자에 의해 조절됩니다.
인간 Claudin-18은 마우스 단백질과 88%의 아미노산 서열 동일성을 가지며, 폐와 위 상피세포의 세포막에 완전히 국한되어 있습니다. 전자현미경 연구에서 세포 간 경계 부위에 집중되어 있음이 확인되었습니다.
이 단백질은 폐와 위 타이트 결합 구조 및 기능 유지에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 추정되며, 내이에서도 발현이 보고되었습니다.
