POU5F1, also known as Oct-4, is a maternally expressed octamer-binding protein and the first transcription factor described for early developmental stages.
Its role in embryonic development suggests utility in stem cell creation and cell replacement therapies for degenerative diseases.
Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be generated by expressing POU5F1 with Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, and c-Myc in mouse fibroblasts.
