Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family proteins function as the terminal electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving proton gradient formation across the inner mitochondrial membrane and producing water.
The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer consisting of 13 subunits. COX6B2 (Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6B2), also known as Cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIb isoform 2 or Cancer/testis antigen 59, is an 88 amino acid mitochondrial protein localized in the intermembrane space. It facilitates dimerization of COX monomers and is specifically expressed in testis, with upregulation observed in certain cancer cell lines.
