Target Information
Ran is a small signaling GTPase involved in nucleocytoplasmic transport. It also plays roles in spindle aster formation and nuclear envelope reassembly during mitosis. Unlike Ras or Rho, Ran is not membrane-associated. The spatial distribution of its accessory proteins—RanGAP and RCC1—defines the local concentration of RanGTP vs. RanGDP for signaling. Mammalian RanGAP attaches to the nuclear pore via SUMO modification at its C terminus, which binds to nucleoporin Nup358.
