Target Information
The vesicle-associated membrane proteins (VAMP), also known as synaptobrevins, are calcium-binding proteins specific to eukaryotes.
VAMPs, together with SNAP-25 and syntaxin, form the core SNARE complex that interacts with NSF and alpha-SNAP, playing a key role in vesicle membrane fusion with the plasma membrane.
- Neurotoxin interaction: Clostridium tetani neurotoxin specifically targets VAMP.
- Disease relevance: VAMP levels are reduced in Alzheimer’s disease.
- Functional role: VAMP2 is a resident protein of the insulin-sensitive GLUT4 compartment, required for vesicle incorporation into the cell surface in response to insulin.
