Target Information
The SMN1 gene is part of a 500 kb inverted duplication on chromosome 5q13.
This region contains multiple genes and repetitive elements, making it prone to rearrangements and deletions.
The telomeric and centromeric copies encode the same protein — survival motor neuron protein.
The SMN complex catalyzes the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins, essential for spliceosome formation.
Mutations in SMN1 cause spinal muscular atrophy types 1 and 2.
