Two classes of glutamate receptors exist: ionotropic and metabotropic receptors.
Ionotropic glutamate receptors are oligomeric complexes of various subunits (GluR17, NMDA13, KAI2) and function as ligand-gated calcium channels.
Metabotropic glutamate receptors are G-protein coupled receptors that, when activated, can stimulate phospholipases or adenylyl cyclase depending on the neuron type.
