This gene encodes class IV alcohol dehydrogenase 7 (mu or sigma subunit), a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family.
Members of this family metabolize various substrates including ethanol, retinol, aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products.
The enzyme encoded by this gene is inefficient in ethanol oxidation but highly active as a retinol dehydrogenase, suggesting its role in retinoic acid synthesis, important for cellular differentiation.
Expression is much more abundant in stomach than in liver, differing from other family members.
