SIRT5는 Sirtuin(Sir2-like) 단백질 계열의 인간 단백질로, 원핵생물과 진핵생물 모두에서 발견됩니다. 모든 Sir2-like 단백질은 보존된 서열 모티프를 포함하는 sirtuin core domain을 가지며, NAD 대사 및 mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase 활성에 관여할 수 있습니다. Sirtuin의 효소 기능은 완전히 규명되지 않았지만, 최근 연구에서는 Sir2가 NAD 대사와 히스톤 탈아세틸화에 관여하는 상호 활성화 메커니즘을 가질 가능성이 제시되고 있습니다.
