PAX8 유전자는 paired box 전사인자 계열에 속하며, paired box domain, octapeptide 및 paired-type homeodomain을 포함하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 핵 단백질은 갑상선 여포세포 발달과 갑상선 특이 유전자 발현에 관여합니다. 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 갑상선 형성 이상, 여포성 갑상선암 및 비정형 여포성 갑상선 선종과 관련이 있습니다. 다양한 아이소폼을 암호화하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
