Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to a highly conserved cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein (ARPP) family. It acts as an endogenous ligand for the sulfonylurea receptor ABCC8/SUR1, which regulates ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels on pancreatic beta cell membranes. These channels play a crucial role in insulin secretion control. ENSA/ARPP-19 is suggested to modulate insulin release and may be a candidate gene for type 2 diabetes. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
