Target Information
CYP7A1 belongs to the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. CYP7A1, located in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids in the liver. This process is the primary mechanism for cholesterol removal from the body.
