Target Information
Autophagy related protein 16L1 (ATG16L1) is encoded by the ATG16L gene located on chromosome 2 in humans. It is also known as WD30 or IBD10 (Inflammatory Bowel Disease 10).
ATG12 and ATG5 conjugate and oligomerize with ATG16L1 to form the ~800 kDa Atg16L complex, which facilitates coupling or lipidation of LC3 to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE).
This ubiquitin-like conjugation system is a key marker for autophagy. The ATG16L complex, along with ATG18 and ATG21, prevents premature cleavage of ATG8-PE by the cysteine protease Atg4 until autophagosome completion.
