Target Information
Protein p21 is a tumor suppressor protein and an inhibitor of Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK), transcriptionally activated by p53.
- Plays a key role in cellular response to genotoxic stress.
- In the nucleus, p21 binds and inhibits Cdk1 and Cdk2, blocking G1/S or G2/M transitions after DNA damage.
- In the cytoplasm, p21 exhibits anti-apoptotic effects by inhibiting caspase 3 and kinases ASK1 and JNK.
- p21 has dual roles in carcinogenesis, functioning as both a tumor suppressor and oncogene.
