Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to an X box promoter element. The gene product is a bZIP protein also identified as a cellular transcription factor binding to an enhancer in the T cell leukemia virus type 1 promoter. It may enhance viral protein expression by acting as a DNA-binding partner of a viral transactivator.
During ER stress, XBP1 mRNA undergoes unconventional splicing mediated by IRE1, resulting in a frame-shift and production of the active isoform XBP1(S). The unspliced isoform XBP1(U) is constitutively expressed and functions as a negative feedback regulator of XBP1(S). A pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 5.
