Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the translation repressor protein family. The 4EBP1 protein interacts directly with eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), a key component of the complex that recruits 40S ribosomal subunits to the 5′ end of mRNAs. Interaction with eIF4E inhibits complex assembly and represses translation. Phosphorylation of 4EBP1 in response to signals such as UV irradiation and insulin leads to its dissociation from eIF4E and activation of mRNA translation.
