GHRL encodes the ghrelin-obestatin preproprotein, which generates ghrelin and obestatin.
- Ghrelin: Ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1; regulates growth hormone release, stimulates appetite, adiposity, and gastric acid secretion.
- Obestatin: May act as a ligand for the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR39; involved in satiety and may reduce appetite and food intake.
