Target Information
This gene encodes coagulation factor XI of the blood coagulation cascade. The protein is present in plasma as a zymogen, a unique enzyme existing as a homodimer of two identical polypeptide chains linked by disulfide bonds. Activation by factor XIIa cleaves internal peptide bonds, generating factor XIa—a serine protease composed of two heavy and two light chains. Factor XIa activates factor IX, triggering the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Defects in this factor cause Rosenthal syndrome, a coagulation abnormality.
