Background
Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily E regulatory subunit 4 (KCNE4) is a member of the voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channel family, known for their complex functional and structural properties. These channels regulate neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume. KCNE4 encodes a type I membrane protein that functions as a β-subunit, assembling with a potassium channel α-subunit to modulate gating kinetics and enhance stability of the multimeric complex. It is prominently expressed in the embryo and adult uterus.
